What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

A ductless mini-split system is a heating and cooling system that delivers conditioned air directly into individual rooms or zones without requiring ductwork.

Unlike traditional forced-air systems, ductless systems consist of an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units, allowing you to independently control the temperature in different areas of your home.

Many homeowners choose ductless systems because they provide both efficient air conditioning during the summer and reliable heating throughout the winter, making them a practical year-round comfort solution.

Benefits of a Ductless Heating & Cooling System

Ductless systems continue to grow in popularity because they offer an efficient, convenient, and versatile alternative to traditional HVAC equipment.

Heating and Cooling in One System

Modern ductless systems provide both heating and cooling, allowing you to stay comfortable throughout every season with a single, energy-efficient system.

Energy Efficiency

Because ductless systems deliver conditioned air directly into each room, they avoid the energy losses commonly associated with ductwork. This can help reduce energy consumption and lower monthly utility costs.

Zoned Comfort

Each indoor unit operates independently, allowing you to customize the temperature in individual rooms or areas of your home. This means family members can enjoy personalized comfort while avoiding unnecessary heating or cooling in unused spaces.

Easy Installation

Since no ductwork is required, ductless systems are often quicker and less disruptive to install than traditional forced-air systems. They are an excellent solution for older homes, home additions, garages, finished basements, sunrooms, and other areas where extending ductwork may not be practical.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Without ducts that can collect dust and allergens, ductless systems can help contribute to cleaner indoor air when combined with regular filter cleaning and maintenance.

Quiet Operation

Most ductless systems operate much more quietly than traditional heating and cooling equipment, allowing you to enjoy consistent comfort without excessive noise.

Professional Ductless System Installation

Proper installation is essential for maximizing the efficiency and lifespan of your ductless heating and cooling system.

Our licensed HVAC technicians begin every project with a thorough assessment of your home’s layout, insulation, and comfort requirements. We then recommend the right equipment and indoor unit placement to ensure optimal airflow, efficiency, and performance.

Every installation is completed according to manufacturer specifications and industry best practices, giving you confidence that your new system will provide reliable comfort for years to come.

What is a ductless mini-split and when is it the right choice?

It is a heat pump or air conditioner where one outdoor unit connects by refrigerant lines to one or more wall, floor or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, with no ductwork involved. It is the right choice when your home has no ducts (radiators or baseboards), when you are conditioning an addition, or when one specific room — a finished basement, an above-garage bedroom, a sunroom, a converted attic office — has never been comfortable because the main system cannot reach it.

Does a ductless system heat as well as cool?

Cold-climate models do both, and heating is often the stronger argument for installing one. In a room that has always been too cold in winter and too hot in summer, a single mini-split solves both problems and does so without running the whole-house system harder to serve one room.

How many indoor heads do I need?

Fewer than most homeowners expect. Each head serves an open zone, so one head can cover a large open-plan area, while a hallway with four closed doors off it needs a head per room that matters. The right answer comes from a room-by-room load calculation. Over-heading a home is a common and expensive mistake, and it also makes the system cycle poorly at low load.

Is a ductless system noisy?

Modern indoor heads are among the quietest options available — typically quieter than a conventional forced-air system’s registers at full airflow, because the variable-speed fan runs slowly most of the time. The outdoor unit does make noise, so its placement relative to bedroom windows and neighbouring properties is worth thinking about at quote stage rather than afterwards.

Can a ductless system replace my furnace entirely?

In a well-insulated home, sometimes yes. In many Durham Region homes the practical answer is a dual-fuel arrangement or keeping the furnace as backup for the coldest days. What determines it is your home’s heat loss at design temperature versus the system’s rated capacity at that temperature — which is exactly what the load calculation tells you.

How is a ductless system maintained?

Indoor head filters are washable and should be rinsed monthly during heavy use — this is the maintenance homeowners most often neglect, and it directly degrades performance. Annually, the indoor coil and blower wheel should be professionally cleaned and the outdoor unit and refrigerant charge checked. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow in winter if it is providing heat.

Are ductless heat pumps eligible for rebates?

Qualifying heat pump upgrades, including ductless systems, can be eligible for Home Efficiency Rebates of up to $5,000 depending on the equipment, the system being replaced and the program rules in force when you apply. Confirm the current requirements with us before purchasing.
