What is the single most effective indoor air quality upgrade?

A properly positioned UV lamp does inhibit microbial growth on the surfaces it directly illuminates, which is why coil-mounted lamps have a legitimate role in keeping the indoor coil and drain pan clean. What UV cannot do is sterilise air moving past it at duct velocity in any meaningful way. Treat coil hygiene as the real benefit and be sceptical of whole-air disinfection claims.

What is the right indoor humidity level in winter?

Aim for 30–50% relative humidity. Below 30% you get dry skin, static, cracking wood and irritated airways. Above roughly 50% in a Canadian winter you start getting condensation on windows and inside wall assemblies, which is a genuine moisture and mould risk. A whole-home humidifier with a humidistat holds the range far better than portable units refilled by hand.

What is an HRV or ERV and do I need one?

A heat or energy recovery ventilator brings in measured fresh outdoor air while transferring heat (and with an ERV, moisture) from the outgoing stale air, so you ventilate without throwing away the energy you paid to produce. Newer, tightly built homes generally need mechanical ventilation because they do not leak enough to self-ventilate. Symptoms that you need one include persistent stuffiness, window condensation and lingering cooking or bathroom odours.

Will an air purifier help my allergies?

Filtration and purification can meaningfully reduce airborne allergen load, and many people notice a difference — but equipment is not a medical treatment and no reputable contractor should present it as one. Sensible sequence: get filtration and sealing right first, control humidity second, add ventilation if the home is tight, and consider dedicated purification last. Anyone selling you the last step first is selling the margin, not the solution.

Does a whole-home system beat portable air purifiers?

For whole-house coverage, yes, because it treats every cubic metre of air that passes through the system rather than one room. Portable units remain useful for a single problem room, particularly a bedroom. The two are complementary rather than competing.
